I found the AI herostacks pretty efficient (=annoying) so far. Any ideas how to counter these annoying "all hero armies"? This reminds me a bit of Warhammer Fantasy Tabletop where regular units were just decoration and battles decided almost only by heroes. I just wonder if this is normal AI behaviour or random. On the other hand the AI managed to decimate all my armies with this strategy - when I brought them to a halt I had nothing left and another AI player simply took over all my cities. So, am i forced to build armies with more than one hero in them? It's a risky tactic, after one or two losses you might end up without any heroes. Those hero armies simply storm any fortification, decimate any missile troops and even my harder hitting melee units are no match. My regular units shoot arrows over arrows at them but to no avail. They are usually faster, more flexible, use spells and are tough as hell. Depending on race and class these heroes are massively overpowered. That means where I have 1 hero and 5 troop units, the AI often uses 3 or 4 heroes with 2-3 troops. However, this also means players don't get to choose what kind of hero they are.Īge of Wonders 4 is available now on PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S.I played several campaigns on simple mode against AI and I found that the AI always seems to build armies from heroes. That city's ruler will become a faction hero for free, and they usually come with a lot of very nice equipment. One other way to get a hero is to integrate a vassal free city. Players also can't dismiss heroes the way they can dismiss regular units, and so the only way to get rid of them is to send them into a suicidal battle and sell off their remains ( aside from the faction's ruler, who will always respawn). For reference, every hero below the hero cap has zero maintenance costs. It's possible to hire a hero without raising the hero cap, but doing so costs an extra 200 gold up front and 30 gold in maintenance per turn. However, players will also need to get a new city to raise the hero cap. That means the best way to raise the hero cap past 3 is to raise the city cap using the Expanded Governance rite in the empire development tree, a rite that every faction gets access to. Because of this, the hero cap is closely connected to the city cap. Conquered and incorporated cities count, but outposts and vassals don't. Players can only have as many heroes in their faction as they have cities under their direct control.
